L.A.-based artist Matthew Johnson's striking portraits focus on the intimacy you experience when you look into your pet's eyes. Matthew's immortalization of that quiet gaze triggers a powerful emotional response evoking feelings of trust, attachment and refuge. Although not all his portraits depict a mutual gaze, the intent remains one of an animal bonding visually with a human, in or out of frame. Since 1991, Matthew has been commissioned to paint for various commercial and private clients around the United States and was honored to be a featured pet portraitist in Boston Magazine. Before painting full time, Matthew was the former Manager of Retail Operations for the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and Director of Retail for both The Walker Art Center and works, for the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Museum of Art. In addition to his painting, Matthew recently designed a line of pet products inspired by textiles represented in the paintings of Dutch Masters.
