Description

Monkey Brown (Joseph William Brown) was P-Nut’s Godfather. He was Charleston’s Al Capone in the 1920’s and 30’s.  He ran a speakeasy and club in Mount Pleasant called White Paradise.  In this painting, Monkey is leaving the Charleston City Jail, formerly located at St. Phillips and Vanderhorst Streets. Monkey was often arrested on the weekends because of his sorted career. However, he was let out on bail the next morning since his crimes were not all that bad.   When he was arrested, friends and neighbors would accompany him to jail to make sure he wasn’t treated badly.  The next morning, up to twenty friends and acquaintances would arrive at the jail to bail him out!
