Artwalk: Friday, June 7, 2019, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
June 7, P-Nut’s Charleston Chronicles
with the Exhibition: P-NUT: Spreading Lowcountry Love through July 13
Join us at the gallery during the June 7 Artwalk, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., for an artist-led discussion of the unique and powerful history behind his paintings and napkin poetry. P-Nut will explain the historical narratives behind various works in the exhibition, as well as share original poems documenting Charleston’s changing landscape. Chat with the artist himself and learn a bit of local lore!
Dog and Horse Fine Art is pleased to present Spreading Lowcountry Love with Joseph “P-Nut” Johnson. In this exhibition, he bridges poetry and painting, local flavor and outsider influence, and upper class and working class through charming colloquial sayings and symbols. Spread the love and the word!
P-Nut, born and raised in Charleston, S.C., has seen the city through devastating lows and unbelievable highs. At every turn, he has known there to be one thing we need – Lowcountry Love. The exhibition will include his paintings on cardboard and canvas documenting Charleston’s history. Some paintings are accompanied by his poems. A selection of P-Nut’s popular “napkin poetry” will be on view. The artist will also be available at the reception to write personalized poetry.
At 16, he began writing poems on birthday cards and napkins at popular Ansonborough watering holes like Cumberland’s Bar and Horse & Court. He captured people instantly with his humor and insight and soon enough, had visitors stopping by the bars just to get a poem from the “Lowcountry Poet.” After a few memorable years in New York, rubbing shoulders with famous comedians and performing some of his own stand-up comedy, P-Nut returned to Charleston to care for his mother.
Back in his hometown, strolling around the waterfront, P-Nut created enough poetry to have two publications under his belt, his first in the Library of Congress. In 2017, he launched a new career in the visual arts. His folk-napkin poetry seamlessly translates into narrative paintings full of spontaneity and life.
In 2018, he had a one-man exhibition and poetry reading at the Charleston Public Library, A P-Nut Party. He has been featured in Garden & Gun, Afar Magazine, Post & Courier, Charleston Magazine, The City Paper, and The Island Packet. His clients hail from Mississippi, Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, California and South America.
